This workshop will provide an overview of best practices for grant writing for non-profit organizations. Participants will learn about funding sources, grant proposals, program narratives, and tips and strategies for grant writing for non-profit and public institutions.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify common funding sources
  2. Compare different types of grants
  3. Understand the general outline of a grant and the application process
  4. Describe best practices in grant writing and obtaining funding
  5. List where to find grant writing resources and future workshops

Jason Flatt, PhD, MPH

Associate Professor
School of Public Health, University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Jason D. Flatt, PhD, MPH (Pronouns: He/Him/They/Them) is an Associate Professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, School of Public Health, Department of Social and Behavioral Health. Jason’s $5+ million-funded NIH research portfolio works to better understand health concerns and needs of diverse sexual and gender minorities or LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual and additional identities) people living with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, and their caregivers and care providers. Dr. Flatt has experience with grant writing, including current and past funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), California Health Care Foundation, Michael J. Fox Foundation, Alzheimer’s Association, institutional grants, foundations, non-profit contracts, and an NIH Loan Repayment award, as well as being awarded competitive grants for training and fellowships, graduate school scholarships, and travel awards to attend national conferences. He also serves on grant review committees for the National Institute on Aging and Alzheimer’s Association.

Laura Hernandez

Director of Youth and Senior Services
The LGBTQ+ Center of Southern Nevada

Laura Hernandez is the Director of Youth and Senior Programs at the LGBTQ+ Center of Southern Nevada. Previously, Laura served as the Executive Director of Gender Justice Nevada and co-founded the Nevada Alliance for Student Diversity. In these capacities, she actively engaged in legislative and policy advocacy to safeguard the rights of transgender students in Nevada schools.

As a grant writer, Laura has successfully secured funding from notable sources including the Office for Victims of Crime (OVC), Groundswell Fund, The Gill Foundation, The American Heart Association, Scan Health Plan, NV Energy, The Engelstad Foundation, and the Third Wave Fund.

Laura is currently focused on enhancing and expanding programs for LGBTQ+ youth and seniors through strategic grant initiatives. Her insight into the grant writing process and her dedicated approach to community-focused projects contribute significantly to the development and sustainability of programs at the Center.
