Purpose

The purpose of the conference, “Strategic Shift: Integrating Social Determinants into Equitable Practices,” is to bring together thought leaders, professionals, and partners from diverse fields to explore and advance the integration of social determinants into equitable practices. By fostering collaborative discussions and sharing innovative insights, the conference aims to inspire transformative actions that address the root causes of disparities, promote inclusivity, and drive positive social change.

Audience

This conference, “Strategic Shift: Integrating Social Determinants into Equitable Practices,” is designed for a diverse audience of professionals, researchers, policymakers, educators, healthcare practitioners, community leaders, advocates, and individuals committed to advancing social equity.

Social determinants of health (SDoH) are the conditions in the environments where people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks. -Healthy People 2030

Objectives

To advance approaches and strategies that enhance equitable practices to address social determinants in all settings.

To explore the impacts of social and political determinants on health and well-being.

To understand the latest research, evaluation, trends, and implementation of scientific approaches to advance health equity and social change.

To formulate and integrate equity principles into your personal, professional, and institutional practices for inclusive and impactful outcomes.

Keynote Speaker

Dr. Khama Ennis

Khama Ennis, MD, MPH is the creator and founder of Faces of Medicine, a donor-funded narrative project centered on the journeys of Black female physicians. She is passionate about the role of physician diversity in improving health equity and reducing disparities. She created Faces of Medicine, a documentary and storytelling project, to move the needle on representation in medicine. Her writing has appeared in the Washington Post and Parents Magazine. She has been an invited speaker on the subject of health equity and a guest on many podcasts.

Dr. Ennis embarked on this project after a 20 year career in Emergency Medicine including 5 years as chief & medical director of the MGB Cooley Dickinson Hospital Emergency Department. She served a two year term as President of the Medical Staff that concluded in 2022. In 2023 she launched Intentional Health, a direct care medical practice grounded in Lifestyle Medicine and Integrative Health. She is also the Assistant Medical Director of University Health Services for the University of Massachusetts’ flagship Amherst campus.

She graduated from Brown University with an undergraduate concentration in medical anthropology. She earned her MD at the NYU School of Medicine and her MPH at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health. She completed her Emergency Medicine residency at Mass General and Brigham and Women’s Hospitals. Dr. Ennis completed Medical Acupuncture training at the University of New England and has also trained in Lifestyle Medicine and completed a fellowship in Integrative Health at Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine. She is the lucky mother of two incredible daughters and a devoted daily NY Times crossword solver.
