DESCRIPTION:Registration (Space is Limited)Workshop Description:\nCommunity-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) is a collaborative research approach where both the researcher and community share decision making and are equitably engaged through all phases of the process. The use of a CBPR approach supports the development of culturally responsive interventions that meet the needs of the community. Participants can expect to be introduced to CBPR\, its principles\, critical points in partnership development\, and common challenges that can occur throughout the process. More specifically\, the challenges of power dynamics\, trust\, and culture will be highlighted. Each session will also incorporate information about implementing and evaluating community programs. This workshop is inclusive for anyone interested in research and assessment. \nLearning Objectives:\n\nDefine CBPR within the scope of community engaged research\nIdentify where community participation occurs in the research and evaluation process\nDescribe how power dynamics occur in partnerships with community members\nEvaluate trust development characteristics for community-academic partnerships\nExplore how culture and different ways of knowing are embedded in the research process\n\nFeatured Speakers\nJulie Lucero\, PhD\, MPH\nAssociate Dean\, College of Health\nAssociate Professor\, Department of Health and Kinesiology\nUniversity of Utah \nJulie E. Lucero\, PhD MPH\, is an associate dean\, College of Health\, and associate professor\, Department of Health and Kinesiology\, at the University of Utah. Lucero’s research is centered on the identification of modifiable social determinants to reduce the impact of health inequities within underrepresented populations. Using mixed methods\, dissemination and implementation science\, and community based participatory research (CBPR)\, her projects have focused on examining factors associated with substance abuse\, mental health\, housing and food security\, and  positive youth development. Lucero has been involved with CBPR projects in collaboration with Native American/Indigenous\, Latino/Hispano\, young adult\, and LGBTQ+ communities. Much of Lucero’s research has contributed to advancing the science of community engaged research approaches. Lucero strives to achieve health equity by means of education\, research\, diversity and inclusion\, and policy development. \nKadie Zeller\nExecutive Director\nOm Namo\nProject Coordinator\nChurchill Community Coalition \nKadie Zeller (she/her) is a Certified Prevention Specialist and works as the Executive Director for Om Namo and the Project Coordinator for Churchill Community Coalition. She is an enrolled citizen of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma and a descendant of the people of Kiribati in the South Pacific. Zeller’s work has primarily focused on primary and secondary substance prevention and mental health wellness for historically misrepresented community members in Churchill County\, Nevada. Her work varies from grassroots community partnership and education to data collection and policy change. Zeller utilizes community based participatory research (CBPR) methods when working with Native American/Indigenous\, LGBTQ+ and rural youth and adults to identify needs and implement programming. Community-based organizations have a growing involvement in the creation and dissemination of health-related information that can impact lives. This workshop will cover the basic principles of health communication and the various ways to deliver health information. The workshop will be interactive and does not require prior health communication experience. Come ready to get creative! \nLearning Objectives:\n\nExplore the concept of health communication\nIdentify different health communication delivery methods\nEvaluate the efficiency of previous health communication campaigns\nDesign effective health communication strategies that are culturally competent and consider the importance of health equity\n\nFeatured Speakers\nAmanda Morgan\, PhD\, MPH\nAssociate Professor in Residence\nUNLV School of Public Health \nAmanda Morgan\, Ph.D\, MPH joined the UNLV School of Public Health in 2011. She has been teaching full time since then\, instructing students in environmental justice\, sexuality and sexuality health\, and introduction to public health courses. As part of the Social and Behavioral Department at the UNLV School of Public Health\, Dr. Morgan is passionate about empowering people to make risk-aware health choices and help prevent the health disparities that we see today across some many Southern Nevada communities. Amanda is a UNLV alumni\, receiving her B.S\, MPH\, and Ph.D all from UNLV. \nDavid Perez\nEquity and Community Director\nImmunize Nevada \nDavid rejoined Immunize Nevada in February 2021 and resumed responsibilities for managing and implementing equitable distribution processes of COVID-19 vaccines and resources through various state initiatives and collaborations. One of which includes the Nevada Vaccine Equity Collaborative\, operated in partnership with the Nevada Minority Health and Equity Coalition. David earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism and public relations from the University of Nevada\, Reno and is currently pursuing his master’s degree in journalism and media studies at UNLV. \nAaliyah Goodie\, MPH\nVaccine Equity Manager\nImmunize Nevada \nAaliyah joined the Immunize Nevada team in November 2020 to work on newly implemented efforts around COVID-19 vaccines. Aaliyah currently serves on the equity team at Immunize Nevada in working to ensure equitable distribution and resources for the COVID-19 vaccine and other vaccines and is also working to launch additional research projects to study COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. Participants can expect to gain a foundational understanding of systems theory\, be able to create system maps\, and access tools to create a framework that can help anticipate possible reactions to change. \nLearning Objectives:\n\nDefine systems thinking and other key concepts like equity and social change\nIdentify core elements and habits of systems thinking\nUnderstand how systems thinking can help advance health equity\nExplore tools to integrate systems thinking into existing frameworks for equity\n\nFeatured Speaker\nWill Rucker\, MA\nCo-Leader\nCompassionate Las Vegas \nWill Rucker is gifted to communicate with clarity\, compassion\, and creativity. He gives voice to what is possible while influencing the culture and developing the systems required to achieve it practically. Will brings a unique perspective of the world\, and our places within it\, to his mission of cultivating a global culture centered on compassion. \nWill is engaged in local\, statewide\, and national platforms advancing socio-spiritual transformation efforts in restorative justice\, health equity\, and humanity first initiatives. DESCRIPTION:Join the conversation over-the-phone or on Facebook Live to have your COVID-19 vaccine questions answered! \nMeet the Moderators\n \nTsanavi Spoonhunter\, Independent Documentary Filmmaker and Reporter\, Northern Arapaho and Northern Paiute \nTsanavi Spoonhunter (Documentary Filmmaker and Reporter) was born and raised in Payahuunadü— “the land of flowing water\,” homelands of her Paiute people— located in Owens Valley\, California. She is also a proud citizen of the Northern Arapaho Tribe of the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming. Her ancestry and upbringing in Indian Country have strongly informed her storytelling and artistic vision. \nShe earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the Reynolds School of Journalism at the University of Nevada\, Reno; and a Masters of Journalism degree from the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California\, Berkeley with a focus in documentary filmmaking. Her short film\, Crow Country: Our Right to Food Sovereignty\, is currently screening at festivals and select venues\, and is featured programming on Alaska Airlines domestic flights. The film has won numerous awards including Best Documentary Short from the 45th American Indian Film Festival. Spoonhunter is a 2021 SFFilm FilmHouse Resident and a NDN Collective Changemaker Fellow. \nWhen she’s not reporting a story or behind a camera\, she spends her time reconnecting with her traditions and the great outdoors. Spoonhunter is passionate about her culture\, and strives to honor it through her professional and personal projects. \n  \n \nDallas Goldtooth\, Actor\, Comedian\, Stage Performer\, & Public Speaker\, Bdewakantunwan Dakota & Dine \nDallas Goldtooth is a Dakota actor\, comedian\, stage performer and public speaker from the village of Cansayapi within the territory of the Oceti Sakowin people. He is also a Dakota language activist\, cultural teacher\, dedicated father and loving husband. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nMeet the Panelists\n \nAmber Torres\, Walker River Paiute Tribal Chairman\, Walker River Paiute \nAmber Torres\, is a tribal citizen of the Walker River Paiute Tribe in Schurz\, Nevada.  She has been elected to serve on the Walker River Tribal Council since 2010\, and held the role of the Tribal Chairman since 2016.  She worked for the Walker River Tribal Health Clinic in Purchased Referred Care for thirteen years prior to this. She has three daughters Kylie\, Elizabella and Brynn Torres.  She currently represents Nevada tribes by serving on the Inter-Tribal Council of Nevada Executive Board\, Equity Cabinet created by Congressman Horsford\, serves as Chair for the Congressionally Mandated Intergovernmental Executive Committee\,  Inter-Tribal Council of Arizona Steering Committee\, National Indian Health Board\, Tribal Leaders Diabetes Committee for IHS/SDPI\, Tribal Interior Budget Council for BIA\, IHS Director’s Workgroup on Improving Purchase Referred Care\, Phoenix Area Representative for IHS Director’s Advisory Work Group on Tribal Consultation Native Farm Bill Coalition\, USDA Tribal Leaders Consultation Workgroup (FDPIR)\, a Co-Chair for Indian Health Service National Budget Formulation Committee\, and the National Congress of American Indians Executive Board (Western Region). She has been nominated to serve on these boards as the Phoenix Area Representative which represent the Arizona\, Nevada and Utah tribes. \n  \n \nDr. Audrey Montooth\, MD\, Family Medicine Physician\, Walker River Paiute \nAfter participating in a pre-med\, intensive prep program at Haskell Indian Nations University\, Dr. Montooth graduated from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 1997. She specializes in Family Medicine at Southside Family Practice\, and is affiliated with Sisters Of Saint Mary Saint Clare Health Center\, SSM Saint Mary’s Hospital and St Mary’s Medical Center. \nA citizen of the Walker River Paiute Nation\, Dr. Montooth previously served as a full-time faculty member at Forest Park Hospital Family Medicine Residency in St. Louis. She conducted her post-residency faculty development fellowship at the University of North Carolina. A 1991 graduate of Columbia University\, Dr. Montooth majored in biology and minored in math\, chemistry and history as an undergraduate while being a 4-years starter on the Cougars’ softball team. \nMost recently\, Dr. Montooth has been selected by her peers for inclusion in Best Doctors in America ® from 2019 to 2020. \n  \n \nLeslie Steve\, Director of Behavioral Health at FTHC\, Fallon Paiute Shoshone \nLeslie Steve is the Director of Behavioral Health at the Fallon Tribal Health Center. She oversees the substance abuse and mental health programs\, SAMHSA Youth and Family TREE project and the SAMHSA Tribal Opioid Response project. Leslie earned a Bachelor’s Degree from UNR and a Master’s Degree from UC Santa Barbara\, specializing in marriage and family counseling.  She is a Nevada Licensed Drug and Alcohol Counselor\, a supervisor for counselor interns and has worked in the behavioral health field for over 33 years. Most importantly\, she is a member of the Fallon Paiute Shoshone Tribe and resides on her reservation.  \n  \n  \n  \n \nRebecca Chavez\, MSN\, CNM\, Midwife Professional\, Temoke Band of Western Shoshone \nRebecca Chavez\, MSN\, CNM is a graduate of the Frontier Nursing University; Hayden\, Kentucky\, Nurse-Midwifery program. She completed her undergraduate degree through the Grand Canyon University of Phoenix\, Arizona. She has provided healthcare for women in Northern Nevada since 1985. Her special interests include pregnancy and childbirth\, adolescent and minority health\, maternal mental health\, trauma-informed care\, elimination of health disparities\, and reproductive justice.  \nRebecca is a member of the Temoke Band of Western Shoshone.
