He also serves on grant review committees for the National Institute on Aging and Alzheimer’s Association. \nLaura Hernandez\nDirector of Youth and Senior Services\nThe LGBTQ+ Center of Southern Nevada \nLaura Hernandez is the Director of Youth and Senior Programs at the LGBTQ+ Center of Southern Nevada. Previously\, Laura served as the Executive Director of Gender Justice Nevada and co-founded the Nevada Alliance for Student Diversity. In these capacities\, she actively engaged in legislative and policy advocacy to safeguard the rights of transgender students in Nevada schools. \nAs a grant writer\, Laura has successfully secured funding from notable sources including the Office for Victims of Crime (OVC)\, Groundswell Fund\, The Gill Foundation\, The American Heart Association\, Scan Health Plan\, NV Energy\, The Engelstad Foundation\, and the Third Wave Fund. \nLaura is currently focused on enhancing and expanding programs for LGBTQ+ youth and seniors through strategic grant initiatives. His research aims to address Latino health disparities. He was born and raised in Southern California and is the first male in his family to graduate from college. He earned his BS in Psychology from University of California\, Davis\, his MPH from San Diego State University\, and his PhD in Health Promotion Sciences from Claremont Graduate University. Prior to coming to UNLV\, he completed a postdoctoral training at UCLA Fielding School of Public Health working on various interventions to address health disparities (e.g.\, HPV vaccination\, colorectal cancer screening\, and preschool obesity prevention). Dr. Johansen strives to train and work alongside the next generation of public health practitioners in Southern Nevada. \nChibudom Yanez\nSenior Management Analyst\nThe City of Las Vegas \nChibudom Yanez has lived in Las Vegas for over seven years and currently serves as a Senior Management Analyst for the City of Las Vegas. With a diverse background in government agencies and non-profit organizations throughout the Las Vegas Valley\, she brings extensive experience to her role. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition Education from the College of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph\, Minnesota. Originally from Nigeria\, Chibudom immigrated to the United States at a young age\, sparking her passion for engaging underserved populations and ethnically diverse communities. Her career has included roles in Foster Care Services\, case management at a local WIC and Early Head Start organization\, and international partnerships promoting equity and education in Spanish-speaking countries. She has designed and facilitated trainings on family preservation\, nutrition education\, and community engagement. Amanda’s research background is on mental health in adolescent and adult populations with an emphasis on improving research methods to be more culturally appropriate. As a researcher at NICRP\, she has designed and implemented many research projects regarding children’s physical health\, mental health\, and education\, as well as lead children’s advocacy initiatives such as Every Child Matters in Nevada and Prevent Child Abuse Nevada. Being a Las Vegas native\, Amanda aims to create a healthier community where families and children are a priority. \nValeria Gurr\, M.A. and Ph.D. Candidate in Public Affairs\nSenior Fellow\nAmerican Federation of Children \nValeria Gurr\, M.A. and Public Affairs Ph.D. candidate at the University of Nevada\, Las Vegas (UNLV)\, is a Senior Fellow for the American Federation for Children. The Concilio Hispano Media Group named her as one of the most influential Hispanics in Southern Nevada in 2018. In 2022\, the UNLV School of Public Policy and Leadership awarded her the Dottie Shank Service Award. In 2024\, Citizen Outreach awarded her The Courage Under Fire for her legislative efforts to bring educational opportunities to Nevada children. \nValeria obtained her bachelor’s degree in Public Relations with a specialization in Marketing from Duoc UC of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in 2009 and a master’s degree in Journalism and Media Studies from the University of Nevada\, Las Vegas (UNLV) in 2013. She is expected to complete her Ph.D. in 2024. Valeria’s research interest is in seeing how the lack of access to quality education in traditional public schools and the digital divide impacted low-income families\, predominantly Hispanic and Latino children\, after the pandemic. Her work\, which bridges healthcare policy and direct patient interaction\, underscores her commitment to groundbreaking healthcare delivery. \nHer leadership tenure includes notable positions on the Silver State Scripts Board\, Co-Chair of the Southern Nevada HIV Prevention Planning Group\, and chairperson of the LGBTQIA+ Workgroup for the Nevada Minority Health and Equity Coalition. Through these platforms\, Dr. Ramirez spearheads initiatives that foster dialogue and collaboration across agencies and communities. \nDr. Ramirez’s expertise is reflected in past roles with EquiScript\, Optum Specialty Pharmacy\, and Avella Specialty Pharmacy\, where she demonstrated excellence in clinical operations and business development and received recognitions such as Clinical Pharmacist of the Year and Retail Pharmacist of the Year\, affirming her excellence in patient care. \nMoreover\, Dr. Ramirez is a fervent educator and mentor. He completed his PhD in Preventive Medicine (Health Behavior Research) from the University of Southern California in 2016. His primary research interests are on the health effects of childhood trauma\, the conceptualization\, measurement\, screening\, and prevention of substance misuse\, and identifying sources of health disparities in underserved communities. He teaches courses in the undergraduate and graduate programs at UNLV including “Health Studies on Dangerous Drugs” and “Applied Statistics for Social and Behavioral Health Research” among others. \nLily Helzer\, MPH \nCancer Prevention & Early Detection Programs Manager\nNevada Cancer Coalition \nLily Helzer is a native Nevadan\, a graduate from the UNR School of Public Health\, and has enjoyed her varied career in Nevada public health efforts supporting chronic disease prevention and control initiatives. She had the good fortune to work alongside NCC for a number of years before officially joining in February 2023.
